I love PostHog's session replays and analytics platform. The session replays are a really neat feature in general but more importantly, very useful to see what users do when errors occur. I have not implemented some of the other features yet but I am looking forward to the days when I implement the AB testing, feature flags or surveys. They AB testing and feature flags appear straightforward to integrate and the surveys look pretty and intuitive with frictionless integration as well.
I added PostHog to a SvelteKit website and the docs were quick and simple. However, I couldnt get events to send from development mode / local site but they worked immediately when deployed to production. I was kind of frustrated because I felt like the docs were leaving something out. Specific to Svelte, I think the docs also should have mentioned throwing the dev flag around the setup function. Non Specific to Svelte, I would have liked to see better documentation on the default options / flags for the setup function. I had to look at the source code to see what the defaults were for masking inputs. Would be great to see it documented on the types itself too.
Our dev team has not done a great job of implementing E2E tests or even any sort of test suites on our API. We have a product that is having errors that dont happen in our happy path and the implementors did not account for unhappy paths. PostHog was a quick bandaid to see what the heck was going on for the users and what info they put in. It would be easier to log the API calls of course but it is nice to see how the users interact with the site.
Signed up for feature flags, stayed for the rest
I really like that PostHog has a lot of features built in. Initially I needed feature flags, but have also been working with the analytics and session replay features - which are really nice. It's been very easy to get the Javascript SDK installed in my codebase and to create feature flags via the PostHog app. I also like how easy it was to identify users and submit person properties via the Javascript SDK without needing to implement a server side piece. I'm currently still on the free account so I haven't tried out email customer support yet but the support forum has been great to have for reference.
- Cohorts vs groups is a bit confusing. - Getting feature flags working with Cohorts took some trial and error. - The documentation can be a bit tricky to navigate but it is extensive and searchable so that helps.
We need feature flags in our application but don't want to spend time developing a solution ourselves. PostHog allows for very easy setup and more importantly management of feature flags and their status across our user base. The session replay and analytics are also very helpful in analyzing usage of our app, as we're currently focused on growing our feature set, so understanding what's being used and how makes a huge difference.
Great experience getting started with PostHog for our startup
Its great how posthog allows me to download the json format of my videos as well as speeds up time that the user is not active in thier session
Its unclear how to determine how long a video is kept in our system but overall a great experience
It shows us where our users are getting stuck in our UI

Events are billed at different rates based on volume and if you choose to send custom user properties with the event.
Anonymous events

Anonymous events
No individually-identifiable info, analyzed in aggregate, don't use person profiles
By default, events are anonymous, meaning they don't have any personally-identifiable information attached to them.
They come with info about the browser and device, visitor's location, and any UTM parameters.
With anonymous events, you can:
- See a Google Analytics-style dashboard
- Access properties like UTMs, location, referrer, page views
Create aggregate insights in Product analytics
- How many times users click an element on a page
- Group visitors by device type or location
- Filter to interactions on a specific page
- Track anonymous users across sessions

Identified events

Identified events
Track usage of specific, logged in users by using person profiles.
Identify users by their email address or other unique identifier, and attach custom properties to their person profiles.
In addition to anonymous event capabilities, you can:
Merge anonymous users with their eventual identified user
- Like when they sign up for your product or use different devices - enables analyzing the user's path
Store custom properties on users
- Use these properties in cohorts, session replay, experiments, and feature flags
Create user-specific insights in Product analytics
- How many times specific users click an element on a page
- Group cohorts of users by device type, location, or property
- Filter to interactions on a specific page by specific users

Pricing FAQ
How do I know what my volume is?
Tim Glaser
The easiest way is to sign up for the Free plan. You'll get an accurate volume projection after just a few days.
Do I pay anything for stored events?
Simon Fisher
No, you only pay the fee per captured event in a given month (i.e. you only pay when each event is first received). There are no additional costs or fees.
How long do you retain data?
Tiina Turban
Data (except recordings, see below) is guaranteed to be retained for 7 years on any paid plan and 1 year on a free plan. After 1 year, data may be moved into cold storage so queries may run more slowly.
How long do you retain recordings?
Rick Marron
Recordings are kept on Clickhouse-based installations for 1 month. For paid customers on PostHog cloud, recordings are kept for 3 months.
What happens after the data retention period elapses?
Marius Andra
Any event or user data stored for more than the retention period may be permanently deleted from our systems.
Is there a free trial on paid plans?
Michael Matloka
We have a generous free tier on every paid plan so you can try out the features before paying any money (though you will need to enter your credit card info). If you have additional needs, such as enterprise features, please get in touch.
What currency are your prices in?
James Hawkins
All prices are in US Dollars (USD), excluding taxes.
Do you offer a discount for non-profits?
Eric Duong
Yes in most cases - 50% off any plan. Create your account, then email sales@posthog.com from the same email address with some basic details on your organization. We will then apply a discount.
Are there any minimums or annual commitments?
Cameron DeLeone
Nope. We can, however, offer annual commitments (for example, to maintain pricing) if you need them as part of an enterprise agreement.
